Causes of Depression

Causes of depression are many almost uncountable.Depression is a disease that the majority of us will be suffering from at some point in our lives. While the exact cause of this mental disorder is not fully understood, it is a fact that it is a serious ailment and it is often characterized by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, lack of energy, low self-esteem, irritability, change in eating patterns, and loss of interest in sex. Depression can also result in suicidal thoughts or attempts. To understand the treatment for depression, it is essential to know what causes this disease.

What is Depression?

Our body chemistry is dictated by how well we metabolize certain chemicals called neurotransmitters. When we become depressed, one of the substances called serotonin is reduced. The brain reacts to this by releasing even more of the substance to help the body cope with the increased amount of anxiety and depression.

Causes of Depression

Antidepressants are thought to work by countering the decreased levels of serotonin, which are the natural regulation for normal brain function. Since the body has a hard time producing sufficient amounts of the chemical, antidepressants are used as alternative treatments. They work by interrupting the reactions of serotonin in the brain and are also available in tablets, inhalers, and even nasal sprays.

One form of medicine that has been proven to be effective in curing depression is called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugs increase the levels of serotonin in the brain and thus help to eliminate some negative effects of depression. They are taken by mouth and also affect the mood of the patient. It has become more popular because of the ease of administration, which makes it easy to take and also the fact that it does not cause any side effects.

NaturalĀ  Body Fight Against Depression

Serotonin is produced by the body naturally in abundance and if there is too much of it produced, it can trigger off depression and anxiety disorders. Many people suffering from this disease find it hard to cope with the heightened emotions and feelings. Most of the side effects associated with these medicines are a sense of fatigue and depression that will persist for a couple of weeks after stopping them.

There are some SSRIs, which increase the levels of serotonin naturally in the body but have the potential to cause more side effects than others. One such drug is Cymbalta. This drug was launched in the late 1990s and is now widely prescribed to treat depression in patients suffering from recurrent depression or those who do not respond to conventional treatments.

The main symptoms of this type of depression include fatigue, restlessness, aches, and pains, difficulty concentrating, loss of appetite, anxiety, trouble sleeping, reduced energy, short temper, and generally a feeling of gloom and pessimism. It is difficult to detect the symptoms early on because these symptoms are usually seen in depression that has gone unnoticed for a while.

It is a known fact that SSRIs help reduce the levels of serotonin in the brain. It is often used by those who feel that depression is interfering with their life. It is most commonly used for short-term periods of relief from depression.

Those who have tried alternative treatments and natural medicines may be concerned about the side effects that they might be suffering from, which might be long term side effects that may contribute to depression. It is important to be aware of the side effects associated with both treatments, to help make the choice of treatment easier.

Like SSRIs, drugs that increase serotonin levels by blocking the serotonin receptors can also cause excessive levels of the substance. These drugs are often used to treat those who have chronic depression and those who are prone to chronic depression. However, since it can be quite dangerous when used chronically, SSRIs are often prescribed for shorter periods.

Depression is a disease that affects every person’s body chemistry. So, it is essential to try and understand the causes of this disease and also to treat it the right way. There are some alternatives that are not only safe but can also give relief.
